Aussie Winters

10 Aug 2024

The World Games is the flagship event of the Special Olympics movement. Just like the Olympics and Paralympics, the event held every two years alternates between Summer and Winter Games.

Special Olympics Australia athletes had their first taste of the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 1997 in Toronto, Canada when an invitational team experienced floor-hockey.

Australia’s first official team competed in 2013 at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. The team of five athletes returned home with 13 medals: 3 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze.

Our last World Winter Games team of 12 athletes competed in Austria in 2017 where they won 10 medals: 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze.

The 2021 World Winter Games in Russia was cancelled.

With 12 athletes, Team Australia 2025 will be our largest World Winter Games team ever.
