It's bronze for our bocce team!
Today, our bocce players won Australia's first medal at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin when they came third in the teams event.
Congratulations to Georgiana Mouratidis, Stuart Gorton, Vicki Robbins and Andrew Robbins (pictured L-R) who defeated the homeside of Germany 10-4 to take out the bronze medal in a spectacular match.
The team were cheered on by the Team Australia fan squad made up of families and athletes from bowling and gymnastics who were not competing today but came along to show their support.
It was a special moment for husband and wife duo Andrew and Vicki Robbins (pictured above). Both have previously won medals in bocce at the World Games, but they have never competed together on the world stage until today.
Speaking on the win, Andrew said, “It is a dream come true! I've always wanted my wife and I to win a bocce medal at the World Games together, and we couldn’t be prouder to have achieved this here today with this incredible team.”
Of the four players, Georgiana is the only team member to be competing at her first World Games. The others are veterans.
In fact, Andrew was the first Australian athlete to win a bocce gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games...way back in 2007!
The Awards Ceremony for the teams event will take place on Wednesday 21 June 2023.
