My Special Olympic Story - Daniel Wright
What is the Special Olympics
A Not-For-Profit organisation, Special Olympics Australia (SOA) gives athletes with intellectual disabilities opportunities to compete equally in sport.
For me, competing within Special Olympics is about Courage, Friendship and Fitness.
Before Special Olympics
One of the dynamics of my autism means I struggle in social settings. Before joining Special Olympics, I was shy and reserved, lacking in confidence, with a social network of family only. I had difficulties finding and keeping employment and had largely withdrawn from society.
Now 7 years into my Special Olympics journey
As a person I have grown in strength to try new things and compete across many sports, gaining in fitness and confidence while also meeting and forming new friends.
My experiences have been:
· - Served 3 years as Athlete’s Representative for my club,
· - Selected twice to represent QLD competing in the Australian National Games.
· - Bronze Medal winning team member on both these occasions in Basketball,
· - Selection to represent Australia at the World Games – Berlin 2023.
This selection realises a long-time dream. One I am very proud of and as such plan to keep working hard on myself and upholding to the Special Olympics Athletes Oath:
“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”
In closing,
I hope my story has provided a strong case for your sponsorship of me and in doing so how you would be making a strong contribution to this realisation. Thank You
Will you get me to the World Games?
I'm so proud to have been picked to wear the green and gold at the World Games in Berlin.
To be part of an Australian team and go overseas will be a dream come true. But I need to raise $9,000 to get there. That’s a lot of money and I need your help!
Will you please donate today and get me to Berlin? I promise I will do my best and make Australia proud. If you donate through this page YOUR money goes directly towards MY fundraising goal.
You can donate any amount you want, but I like these amounts:
$64 because it represents each athlete
$28 because it represents each official
$92 because it represents the whole team
$150 because it’s just a good number!
I’m told that donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible, so please donate and help me get to the Games.
I’ll let our team know that you’re awesome because you support us. Thank you!
