Nathan Harvey

Team Australia - 2019 World Games

I made it!!! selected to ride for Australia Special Olympic World Games in Abu Dhabi

Nathan Harvey's love of horses is contagious - one can't help but get swept away with his enthausiasm, which is most likely why this talented rider has over 16,400 facebook fans! Diagnosed with Autism at Two, Nathan did not speak a word until he was given a pony named Tommy for his Fifth Birthday, when it came time to blow out his candles on his cake Nathan could not be found - he was in the stables, speaking clearly and reading Tommy a bed-time story. A progressive eye disease means Nathan is legally blind, which makes the depth of his relationship with his horses vital - Nathan has no other option but to trust his horse implicitly to be his eyes in the dressage arena. Enter Dom, a magnificent Black Trakehner Stallion, who is the perfect partner for training and competing., and his best friend, playing at the beach with a soccer ball and galloping through the waves. Nathan has always found strength and inspiration in his horses. "I don't feel disabled when I'm with my horses", he says. "When I ride, the world disappears ... it's like the best dream in the world." When Nathan first started out competing at numerous disciplines, dressage stole his heart with it's 'dance - like' beauty. "It's like a ballet". he explains, my partner being my horses." "When I first began 7 years ago, I realized this was a long & patient partnership until I feel right, in my horses back." Nathan 32 is a Grade V Para Equestrian and aims to compete at the Para Equestrian World Games. His program over the next few years is to build on his successes at the recent 2018 National Special Olympic Games where Nathan was chosen to represent Australia at Abu Dhabi 2019 Special Olympic World Games. On return to home after the games, Nathan has high expectations of his horses to perform at Open EA Competitions and qualify for the Boneo Spring CDI in 2019, Sydney CDI and the NSW State Championships. Nathan will complete his EA Introductory Instructors Certificate with hopes of training riders with Special needs to find their place in the fabulous world of Horse Sports. Nathan has a full Team of horses to keep him busy, his competition horses, Dom Summer & Flip, as well as 2 young horses Nathan is training to come through and compete towards the end of 2019. Nathan is now the Proud owner of Kiteroa Dominic and will stand Dom at stud during the 2019 Season. Special Olympics has opened the door for Nathan to see the world and to be able to develop his own business. Nathan began at his first SO rally day in 2014 with Robbie the Wonder Horse, they both tried so hard, missing letters and making mistakes until they became better and better. Nathan will become more active in encouraging other people with disabilities to get out to compete, "More & more people with similar challenges are coming out and competing with their horses," he says, " In the past they stayed home and were lucky to get out once a week to go to the supermarket - now we are all out there following our dreams and succeeding." Special Olympics needs a boost, people need to be aware, this is not a group of disabled people playing Hopscotch, this is serious athletic sports. No different to the Olympics, we work as hard, train as hard and do our very best, we need Australia to know who we are! Nathan Harvey written by Kim Harvey

I am part of Team Australia!

From 8-21 March 2019 I will wear the green and gold with pride when I represent Australia at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

I have trained hard to achieve this and can't wait to show the world what I can do alongside 7,000 athletes from 170 nations.

I need your help to get there. Please assist me by making a tax-deductible donation. Thanks for your support!

You can follow my journey by visiting or following Special Olympics Australia on Facebook.

Please Note
Total funds raised includes deposit, levy and any offline fundraising contributions, but only online donations will appear below.
Donations can only be accepted this page. A tax-deductible donation receipt is generated automatically. Donations of $2.00 or more are tax-deductible. A donation is tax-deductible only if the donor does not receive any direct benefit from the donation (eg. Athlete levies where you contribute to your direct family member and receive a direct benefit are not tax-deductible). If your supporter is in doubt we recommend they seek their own independent tax advice as to whether their claim is tax-deductible.
