Be part of the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games as volunteer program launches

19 Mar 2026

The 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games will bring together athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism from across Australia in Melbourne this October (19-23), and more than 800 volunteers are needed to support the event.

Today, Special Olympics Australia has officially launched its volunteer program, calling on Australians to be part of one of the country’s largest inclusive sporting events.

Volunteers will play a vital role in welcoming teams, families and supporters travelling from across the country and helping competitions run smoothly. Opportunities include assisting with sport operations, medal ceremonies, welcoming teams at airports and accommodation, media liaison and content production, and helping deliver major moments such as the Opening Ceremony.

With more than 800 volunteers needed to deliver the Games, Special Olympics Australia CEO Jamie O'Connor said community support will play a critical role in bringing the event to life.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of Special Olympics; they make the impossible possible,” O’Connor said.

“The National Games bring together athletes, families and supporters from across every corner of Australia, and that only happens because of the passion and commitment of our volunteers.”

In 2026, Special Olympics celebrates 50 years of changing lives through sport in Australia - and there’s no better way to mark this milestone than with our biggest national event. This milestone makes the call for volunteers even more special - it’s a chance to be part of a legacy and help shape the next chapter of the movement.

“As we celebrate 50 years of Special Olympics in Australia, we have a chance to reflect on the incredible community that has built this movement and to inspire the next generation,” O’Connor said.

“Our volunteers will help shape not only an unforgettable Games but also create an environment where athletes can perform at their best, build confidence and experience the joy of sport.”

Volunteers can nominate their preferred sports or service areas when registering their interest, with opportunities available both behind the scenes and in the heart of the action.

People aged 16 years and over are eligible to volunteer. All volunteers will complete an online induction and safeguarding training ahead of the event, with those aged 18 and over required to hold a valid Working with Children Check.

Volunteering at the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games offers a unique opportunity to connect with athletes from across Australia, celebrate inclusion and be part of a truly memorable sporting event.

The 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games is supported by the Victorian Government through the Significant Sporting Events Program.
