Tickets on Sale for Special Olympics Australia National Games Opening Ceremony

Tickets are now on sale for the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games, a landmark celebration in the organisation's 50th year. 

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday 19 October, 3pm-5pm, at Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne, bringing together athletes, families, supporters and the broader community to celebrate the power of sport to change lives.

Marking this significant anniversary year, the Opening Ceremony, under the direction of accomplished Creative Director Andrew Walsh AM, will be a vibrant showcase of sport, entertainment and celebration, featuring a Parade of Athletes, live performances, and powerful moments celebrating athletes with intellectual disability and autism from across Australia. 

The event will be hosted by renowned journalist and Nine News Sydney anchor Peter Overton, a long-standing Special Olympics Australia ambassador of 25 years, who will guide audiences through an unforgettable celebration. 

Entertainment will feature an exciting line-up including DJ Cooper Smith, Eliza Hull OAM, BAM Arts Inc performances and breakthrough performing Victorian arts companies, and the Victorian Police Pipe Band, delivering a dynamic and enegetic program to launch the Games in style. 

One of the most symbolic moments of the ceremony will see the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Final Leg team, officers and athletes carry the Flame of Hope into the arena before lighting the cauldron, officially opening the National Games and marking the beginning of competition. 

Special Olympics Australia CEO Jaime O'Connor said the Opening Ceremony would be a defining momement in the National Games journey. 

"The National Gales are where sport, friendship and community come together in the most incredible way. Our athletes have worked incredibly hard to get here, and Melbourne will provide the perfect state," O'Connor said. 

"We're inviting everyone to come along, cheer loudly and be part of the experience. Once you see the joy and camaraderie on display, you quickly realise these Games are about so much more than medals. They're about belonging, opportunity and celebrating what's possible when everyone gets their change to shine."

Minister for Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said Victoria is proud to welcome the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games to Melbourne, thanks to the Significant Sporting Events Program and the Victorian Government's Community Support Fund. 

"2026 marks 50 years of Special Olympics Australia changing lives through sport and creating a lasting legacy of opportunities for athletes with disabilties. 

"These games will bring together more than 900 athletes from across the country for five days of exciting competition as well as an opening ceremony not to be missed."

The Opening Ceremony will set the tone for the National Games, showcasing the spirit of inclusion that defines the Special Olympics movement and highlighting the power of sport to change lives.
