What’s the challenge?

Over four weeks, we’re challenging you to achieve your own fitness goal, while raising money for our charity partner of 31 years, Special Olympics Australia. You can walk, run, roll or do whatever you like as long as you get moving and you can measure a distance! Do it by yourself or as a team, just sign up and track your progress using your fitness app.

Charity is in our DNA

Metcash has always been a proud charity supporter and we’re delighted to have supported Special Olympics Australia for 31 years.

With our help, Special Olympics Australia continue to provide physical activity and lifestyle programs to people with intellectual disability and autism.
This improves their wellbeing and social connection to community for themselves and their families.

Back in the Beginning.

In February 1993, IGA Managing Director, Mr Mike Abney presented a cheque for $12,312 to celebrate the partnership between Metcash Foods and Special Olympics Australia.

Swimmer, Joseph Walker and volunteer, Rex Langthorne accepted the cheque of behalf of Special Olympics Australia, and we continue to celebrate the partnership today.

Your impact

By taking part in our inaugural Community Champions Challenge you’re championing our commitment to the community and our charity partner of 31 years Special Olympics Australia.

If you need some inspiration, watch these Special Olympics athletes as they recite the Special Olympics Athlete's Oath and pledge to do their best.

Let’s do good and feel good, together.

Champion minds and bodies

While Metcash has supported Special Olympics Australia for 31 years, our independent retailers and suppliers regularly champion the cause too.

In 2022, local stores and suppliers in Launceston supported the Special Olympics Australia National Games by donating fresh fruit and water to keep 750 athletes and over 600 volunteers fuelled for competition…for seven days of sport, fun and friendship!

Amazing!

Champion inclusion

We know that many of our independent retailers employ people with intellectual disability and autism.

One of those people is Special Olympics athlete Ariana who recently finished work experience at her local IGA store. Thanks to the support of her manager and colleagues, she’s built the confidence and skills to progress to employment.

Ariana now works part-time stacking shelves, checking use-by dates and serving customers. She says, “I love it."

Champion your dreams

This year 64 Aussie athletes became world champions when they competed at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin. It was the biggest sporting event on the planet with over 7,000 athletes from 190 delegations.

Team Australia competed across nine sports and returned home with 15 gold, 22 silver and 26 bronze medals!

Metcash and our generous suppliers donated to Team Australia to make sure athletes could follow their dreams.
