We kicked this fundraiser off with a $1,000 goal — and honestly, that alone felt huge. But then you legends smashed it in just a few days. So, we doubled it… and you're smashing that too.

Turns out we seriously underestimated just how generous the people of Port Stephens and Maitland LGAs really are. And it’s not just our patch getting behind us — donations are rolling in from Inverell, the Back’o’Bourke and everywhere in between!

Now, it’s never a competition… but let’s just say the greater Newcastle–Hunter Region is definitely watching. Lake Macquarie PD, Newcastle City PD and Hunter Valley PDs are rallying their communities too.

So let’s show them what Port Stephens–Hunter is made of. We might be the sometimes forgotten, often underestimated crew — but we’re united, motivated, and absolutely unstoppable when it comes to supporting those who deserve it most.

We've 'smuggled' a special team uniform for the plunge!

When you’re about to throw yourself into freezing water in the middle of winter, you’d better make sure you’re dressed for the occasion… or at least dressed memorably.

We’re proud (and slightly nervous) to announce that the PSH Polar Bears will be taking on the upcoming Polar Plunge in style, thanks to the legends at Budgy Smuggler, who have generously partnered with us to create custom-made smugglers and smugglettes for the big day.

And trust us—these aren’t just any swimmers.

They represent something much bigger.

Clad in nothing but Budgy Smugglers (He says “maybe”) and courage, the Boss will be stepping well outside his comfort zone—all for a cause that matters.

What makes this even more special is the incredible support rallying behind it.

From local businesses to sporting organisations, the generosity shown so far has been nothing short of amazing. Budgy Smuggler jumping on board isn’t just about adding a bit of fun (although they’ve absolutely delivered there)—it’s a reflection of how willing our community is to get behind something meaningful.

Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about the plunge.

Why We’re Taking the Plunge: PSH Police Dive In for Special Olympics Australia

At the Port Stephens–Hunter Police District, we’re used to stepping into tough situations — but this winter, we’re stepping into something a little different: freezing cold water.

On the 2 August 2026, officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter PD will be taking part in the Polar Plunge, a statewide fundraising effort supporting Special Olympics Australia. It’s a simple idea with a powerful impact: jump into icy water to raise money for athletes with intellectual disability and autism, helping them access inclusive sport, coaching, equipment, and competition pathways.

And yes — it’s every bit as cold as it sounds.

Why we’re doing it

Our officers see the best and the hardest parts of our community every day. We know how important it is to show up, give back, and stand beside the people we serve — not just in emergencies, but in moments of joy, challenge, and connection.

The Polar Plunge is one of those moments.

It’s a chance for us to:

• Give generously

• Show our commitment to inclusion

• Support athletes who overcome challenges with courage and pride

• Raise funds that directly change lives

• Have a laugh at our own expense

Because let’s be honest — plunging into icy water isn’t glamorous. It’s uncomfortable, undignified, and guaranteed to produce some very questionable facial expressions. But if a few minutes of shivering helps an athlete train, compete, or feel the pride of belonging to a team, then it’s absolutely worth it.

The impact is real

Special Olympics Australia provides year‑round opportunities for athletes to build confidence, independence, friendships, and community. These programs aren’t just about sport — they’re about identity, inclusion, and the chance to shine.

Every dollar raised through the Polar Plunge helps:

• Fund local sports programs

• Provide coaching and equipment

• Remove barriers to participation

• Create stronger, more inclusive communities
