Volunteers

Volunteering at the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games offers a unique opportunity to connect with athletes from across Australia, celebrate inclusion and be part of a truly memorable sporting event.

Join our team - volunteer at the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games!

The 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games will bring together athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism from across Australia in Melbourne this October (19-23), and more than 800 volunteers are needed to support the event.

Volunteers will play a vital role in welcoming teams, families and supporters travelling from across the country and helping competitions run smoothly. Opportunities include assisting with sport operations, medal ceremonies, welcoming teams at airports and accommodation, media liaison and content production, and helping deliver major moments such as the Opening Ceremony.

"Standing beside athletes when they are achieving great things is the greatest reward that volunteering provides "

Mallika Van Pelt - Queensland

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers can nominate their preferred sports or service areas when registering their interest, with opportunities available both behind the scenes and in the heart of the action.

Who Can Volunteer?

People aged 16 years and over are eligible to volunteer. All volunteers will complete an online induction and safeguarding training ahead of the event, with those aged 18 and over required to hold a valid Working with Children Check.

General Volunteers

Assist with a wide variety of roles, including: Venue support and wayfinding, medal ceremonies, results running, athlete liaison, VIP guest services and airport and accommodation welcome.

Sports Officials

Support the delivery of competitions by helping enforce rules, maintain fair play, and ensure safety. Formal accreditation is preferred but no required. Some sports will offer training for new volunteers.

Team Leaders

Lead and support a group of volunteers within your allocated sport or service area. Leadership experience is preferred but not essential. Team Leaders are requested to be available for the duration of the Games (19-23 October).

"Through Special Olympics, you will meet some of the most courageous, funniest and contagious people you will ever know. You won’t just teach sports; you’ll gain an entirely new perspective on resilience and teamwork."
