Fundraising to get to Melbourne

We are the first WA Special Olympics netball team to participate in the National Special Olympic Games, and we are proud to represent our state.

Our team comprises 10 players – 8 females and 2 males – aged between 15 and 50, and we all play No Limits netball on a regular basis.

To be selected in the state netball team we all had to play qualifying events with our No Limits netball team and participate in the 2025 WA Special Olympics State Games. State Games are held annually, and the National Games every four years. If we do well, we might be selected to progress and represent Australia at the World Games, but we take one step at a time.

Special Olympics was created to challenge injustice, exclusion and neglect, and to build a more inclusive world through sport. By focusing on what people can do rather than their limitations, Special Olympics fosters inclusion, joy, confidence and improved health, while showcasing the abilities, achievements and potential of athletes with an intellectual disability and/or autism.

We have been training as a team since February and meet each week under the Unified netball program run by Special Olympics WA. It is lots of fun and we are learning new skills all the time. This program is open to Special Olympic athletes and mainstream athletes of all abilities.

Special Olympics National Games are held in October at Melbourne, and we are very excited to be going as a team.

The cost of the Melbourne trip is expensive ($4,500). At least 7 of the athletes in the team are on the disability pension, while 3 are still at school.

We are looking at raising money through other avenues too. We have applied to our local shires for assistance and our local members of parliament, with mixed results. Our younger 4 four athletes may be able to apply for a grant through the Australian Sports Commission but there is nothing for our six athletes aged over 24.

Some of us have tried our own fundraising efforts, a movie night and making small gifts and baked goods for sale, and we will continue these efforts along with our savings.

In the meantime, we would appreciate any donations that you may give.
